The Lagos state government has defended the outright removal of beggars and other individuals constituting nuisance along the road median, describing it as a security precaution.
Commissioner of environment and water resources Tokunbo Wahab in a social media post, said public spaces must remain orderly and free from activities that hinder movement or pose safety risks.
While some internet users berated officers of the agency for manhandling persons with disabilities among the beggars, the commissioner maintained that disability is not an excuse for lawlessness.
He further disclosed that all individuals arrested during the exercise would be profiled and handed over to the appropriate authorities for further action, in accordance with the state’s laws on environmental sanitation and public conduct.
The agency also reiterated its commitment to sustaining similar clearance operations across the state, urging residents to cooperate with environmental officers in maintaining a clean, safe, and orderly Lagos.
