Retirees have been urged to embrace healthy, active lifestyles to maintain both physical and mental well-being, prevent premature aging, and combat isolation.

The Oyo State Head of Service, Mrs. Olubunmi Oni, mni and a former Secretary to the State Government/Head of Service, Chief Adebisi Adesola gave the charge on Thursday during an Elders’ hangout organised by the Association of Retired Head of Service and Permanent Secretaries of Oyo and Osun States held at the IITA, Ibadan.

The Head of Service, Mrs. Olubunmi Oni noted that Oyo State government is committed to improving the welfare of its retirees.

She made the assertion through the Permanent Secretary, Office of the Head of Service, Mr. Audu Akeem.

The Head of Service celebrated the retirees for their contributions to the advancement of the civil service in Oyo State.

She appealed to them to stay productive to enjoy a fulfilling retirement.

During the event, which was witnessed by over 90 members of the Association, Chief Adebisi highlighted the importance of post-retirement engagement and assured the retirees of continued support.

Chief Adebisi, who doubles as the Chairman of the Association said activities such as volunteering, exploring new hobbies and engaging in community events help retirees stay physically fit, mentally stimulated, and socially connected.

Also, the organising committee chairman, Chief Bayo Oyero noted that efforts like engaging in community events contribute to a higher quality of life, a greater sense of purpose, and a more fulfilling retirement.

Chief Oyero, an Elder statesman, urged the retirees to stay mentally and physically active.

“I will urge us to keeping ourselves and keep a tab on our health. Regular check-ups will prevent so many old-age sicknesses.

To prevent premature ageing and isolation, let us engage in meaningful activities and visit our doctor regularly,” Oyero said.

He described the event as a modest gesture of gratitude, acknowledging the role the retirees’ played in the civil service of Oyo State.

Earlier, Dr. Augustine Okesola delivered a lecture on “Understanding Oral Health: Beyond just Teeth.”

He posited that good oral health is linked to overall well-being and can prevent systemic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes, highlighting the mouth as a critical entry point for understanding and improving general health.
