The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has expelled three sitting governors and several other prominent members for anti-party activities and gross indiscipline.
The affected governors are Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), and Dauda Lawal (Zamfara). Other high-profile figures expelled include former Senate President and Board of Trustees Chairman, Senator Adolphus Wabara, and the party’s Deputy National Chairman (South), Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja.
The decisions were ratified on Tuesday during the party’s 103rd NEC meeting held at its national secretariat in Abuja, signalling a drastic effort to centralize control and punish members involved in a recent factional convention.
Acting Facrional National Chairman, Alhaji Mohammed Abdulrahman, who presented the memo for expulsion, cited the members’ “disregard for court judgements” as a primary reason, an action he stated had brought the party into disrepute.
The communique from the meeting, read by the National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, outlined the severe breaches that led to the sanctions. It expressed “deep concern over the actions of some members who violated subsisting court orders by organizing and attending a purported and unauthorized convention,” an act it said triggered widespread confusion and defections.
The purge extended beyond individual expulsions. The NEC also ratified the dissolution of the State Executive Councils in Bauchi, Oyo, Zamfara, Yobe, Lagos, and Ekiti States.
The National Working Committee (NWC) was directed to constitute caretaker committees and commence fresh congresses in these states immediately.
Meanwhile, the committee approved a “Party-wide reconciliation initiative to heal divisions and rebuild trust,” but firmly stated that this reconciliation “does not undermine discipline.” A nationwide membership audit and re-validation was also announced ahead of the 2027 general elections.
