The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Fola Oyekunle, has emerged winner of the Ibadan North Federal Constituency by-election, defeating his closest challenger from the All Progressives Congress (APC) by a wide margin.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Oyekunle winner in the early hours of Sunday, announcing that he secured 18,404 votes against APC’s Adewale Olatunji, who polled 8,312 votes.
The election was conducted to fill the vacant House of Representatives seat following the death of Rep. Olaide Akinremi, popularly known as “Jagaban,” on July 10, 2024.
Speaking on the outcome, Oyo State’s Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Adeniran Tella, described the poll as peaceful and transparent. He noted that no major incidents of violence were recorded, and the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machines functioned without glitches.
“The process went smoothly across the constituency, and we are pleased with the level of compliance with electoral guidelines,” Dr. Tella said.
However, despite the seamless conduct, journalists observed a low voter turnout across the 512 polling units in Ibadan North, a constituency with more than 272,000 registered voters.
