A police inspector has been killed during a rescue operation in Oyo State, the state police command confirmed on Sunday.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Olayinka Ayanlade, the incident occurred in Olorunda Village, Ojongbodu, within the Oyo West Local Government Area, while officers responded to a distress call about a kidnapping.
The assailants had abducted Haruna Lawal and fled with his motorcycle to an unknown location. During the rescue attempt, an inspector lost his life. The victim, Lawal, sustained a head injury and was immediately taken to the General Hospital in Oyo town, where he is now receiving treatment.
“The command received a distress call from Alimot of Ojongbodu Area, reporting that suspected kidnappers armed with dangerous weapons had invaded her brother’s residence,” Ayanlade stated.
He added that despite the loss, the operation led to the successful rescue of Lawal, highlighting the command’s “swift and coordinated response” and “unwavering commitment to the protection of lives and property.”
