Ahead of today’s nationwide protests organized by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), police forces across the country have deployed special units and tactical teams to maintain order and prevent violence during the demonstrations.
State police commands stated their readiness to address any attempts by miscreants or political actors to disrupt the rallies.
The NLC has insisted it will proceed with the protests, which are a response to worsening insecurity in Nigeria and unresolved labour concerns. When asked about mobilization efforts, NLC spokesperson Benson Upah affirmed, “We are going on with the protest across the country.”
Upah also issued a stern warning that any interference with today’s National Day of Protest and Mourning could lead to a nationwide indefinite strike. In a statement on Tuesday, he revealed that the union had received intelligence indicating that “unscrupulous agencies and desperate political hirelings” might attempt to infiltrate or violently disrupt the protests.
He stressed that harm to any worker or citizen during the demonstrations would trigger an immediate and total shutdown of all sectors of the economy.
