Federal Government sources have accused the United States Mission in Nigeria of orchestrating a calculated smear campaign that threatens to strain longstanding diplomatic ties between the two countries.
The accusation follows the reported circulation of a controversial article by the U.S. Mission, originally published by The Africa Report, which sharply criticised Nigerian elites for allegedly misusing public funds on lavish infrastructure projects while large segments of the population remain impoverished.
The article singled out the construction of new government lodges in Oyo and Gombe states, framing them as examples of misplaced priorities and governance failures.
However, officials close to the Nigerian Presidency have strongly condemned the portrayal, arguing that it was both unfair and diplomatically inappropriate.
“These are two of the most financially responsible governors in the country,” a senior source asserted. “Governor Seyi Makinde has earned widespread commendation for his fiscal discipline, and Governor Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe has been strategic in his investments, prioritising healthcare, infrastructure, and timely salary payments.”
According to multiple sources, the government believes the publication may have been motivated by a prior diplomatic disagreement, specifically, a rebuffed request made by the U.S. Mission, although no further details were provided.
