President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on governors elected on the platform of opposition parties to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC), describing the ruling party as a “growing force” and a “safe harbour from confusion.”
Speaking on Thursday during the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the APC in Abuja, Tinubu said the party remains open to welcoming new members, including serving governors ready to abandon what he referred to as “a sinking ship.”
“It is not a bad idea to abandon a sinking ship and be absent from a coalition of confusion,” Tinubu told party members, taking a jab at the opposition.
The president commended APC governors and party members for their unity and commitment, noting that the party now controls 23 states across the country and counting.
“I want to thank our governors. Today, I think we have 23 governors and still counting. I thank all of you for your show of love, solidarity, and accommodation,” Tinubu said.
He specifically welcomed the recent defections of Governors Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State and Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom, who crossed over from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC.
The president emphasised the importance of continued growth and internal stability within the APC, saying unity remains its greatest strength.
The NEC meeting brought together party leaders, governors, lawmakers, and other stakeholders as the APC plots strategies for future elections and governance.
