The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has set up a seven-member ad hoc committee to investigate claims of differences between tax laws passed by parliament and the versions later signed into law and published.
The committee, announced during Thursday’s plenary, is chaired by Muktar Aliyu Betara. It includes Ahmed Idris Wase, Sada Soli, James Faleke, Fred Agbedi, Babajimi Benson and Iduma Igariwey.
The move followed a matter of privilege raised on Wednesday by a lawmaker from Sokoto State, Abdulsammad Dasuki. He alleged that the contents of the gazetted tax laws did not match what lawmakers debated and approved.
“I was here, I gave my vote and it was counted, and I am seeing something completely different,” he said.
Dasuki told the House he compared the published laws with official parliamentary records and found what he described as discrepancies. He warned that such differences could damage confidence in the legislative process and raise constitutional issues.
The committee is expected to review all relevant documents and report its findings to the House.
