The Senate will today commence the screening and possible confirmation of the newly appointed service chiefs nominated by President Bola Tinubu, marking another step in the administration’s bid to overhaul Nigeria’s security architecture.
President Tinubu’s request was conveyed in a letter read during Tuesday’s plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who urged lawmakers to give the nominees “expeditious consideration.”
The nominees include Gen. Olufemi Oluyede as Chief of Defence Staff; Maj. Gen. Waidi Shaibu as Chief of Army Staff; Rear Admiral Idi Abbas as Chief of Naval Staff; Air Vice Marshal Kennedy Aneke as Chief of Air Staff; and Maj. Gen. Emmanuel Undiendeye as Chief of Defence Intelligence.
Akpabio referred the President’s letter to the Committee of the Whole, which will handle the screening and confirmation process scheduled for today. The exercise is expected to be closely watched as Nigerians anticipate a reinvigorated leadership within the military amid ongoing security challenges across the country.
