South-East leaders say they are intensifying efforts to secure the release of detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, through a political arrangement, assuring residents that “all hope is not lost.”
Speaking on behalf of regional leaders, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ben Kalu, said discussions are underway to pursue a political pathway now that court proceedings have concluded. In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Levinus Nwabughiogu, Kalu expressed confidence that President Bola Tinubu would consider the plea of Igbo stakeholders.
Kalu urged residents of the South-East and Nigerians at large to remain calm, stressing that the environment is now right for dialogue. “It is time to explore political solutions that were previously hindered because the matter was before the court,” he said. “Now that the court has finished, we are intensifying the request for the President’s intervention. We are sure he is not averse to it. We are going to get it. All hope is not lost.”
The renewed push came on a day of heightened tension in court, where proceedings took an unexpected turn after Kanu interrupted the judge, prompting security operatives to remove him from the courtroom.
South-East leaders maintain that a political resolution remains the most viable path to easing regional tensions and restoring peace. They insist that quiet diplomacy, rather than confrontation, will yield the desired outcome in the coming weeks.
