President Bola Tinubu has declared that the establishment of state police to tackle Nigeria’s security challenges will not be delayed, while also asserting that the nation’s economy has emerged from uncertainty.
Speaking at an interfaith breaking of fast with governors and senior officials at the Presidential Banquet Hall in Abuja on Monday, Tinubu addressed governors and top officials during the first Iftar of the 2026 Ramadan season. The President assured Nigerians that his administration’s promise to combat insecurity through state policing remains firmly on track.
“What I promise you is not to be postponed. We will establish state police to combat insecurity,” Tinubu stated emphatically, signalling the government’s commitment to devolving policing powers to sub-national levels as part of efforts to address widespread security challenges.
The President also expressed optimism about Nigeria’s economic recovery, declaring that the country had turned a corner after a period of difficulty. “We are out of the woods. We are out of the dark tunnel of uncertainty. The economy is showing up,” he said, offering a positive assessment of his administration’s economic management.
During the event, Tinubu appealed to Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf to exercise restraint amid political tensions in the state. The governor recently joined the All Progressives Congress after parting ways with his political godfather, former Governor Dr Rabiu Kwankwaso, and the New Nigeria People’s Party. While lawmakers elected on the NNPP platform followed Yusuf to the APC, Deputy Governor Aminu Gwarzo remained with the NNPP, creating political friction with the state House of Assembly allegedly plotting his impeachment.
Addressing the situation, the President said, “I’m glad I see Abba from Kano, even though the cap is red, it’s not different from APC. I saw the crisis on TVC news, please temper justice with mercy.”
Tinubu also called for inclusivity within the ruling APC, urging governors to accommodate young party members. He appealed to party leaders to bear in mind that younger members also have aspirations, saying, “Tolerate everybody. Let’s see the young ones breathe too.”
The President commended Borno State Governor Professor Babagana Zulum for his Ramadan outreach programmes benefiting both Muslims and Christians, describing the initiative as a very good spirit.
