President Bola Tinubu has decorated Tunji Disu with his new rank as the acting Inspector-General of Police at the State House, Abuja, barely 24 hours after the resignation of former inspector general of police kayode Egbetokun citing pressing family needs.
Present at the ceremony were the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, and the immediate past IGP, Kayode Egbetokun.
Disu’s appointment came just 48 days before his scheduled retirement on April 13, 2026, when he would have reached the mandatory retirement age of 60 years.
However, under the amended Police Act, which allows Inspectors-General of Police to serve a four-year tenure regardless of age, Disu may remain in office until 2030.
Until his appointment, Disu served as Assistant Inspector-General in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex, Alagbon, Lagos until his promotion to the rank of Assistant Inspector-General of Police last year.
Speaking to journalists at the State House, Abuja, shortly after being decorated with his new rank, The newly appointed Acting Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, declared that his foremost priority is to galvanise officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force towards ending insurgency, banditry and other security challenges confronting the nation.
He said while police personnel had been working hard across the country, what was required now was renewed focus and morale.
“Most importantly again, the country is facing a particular problem now; the issue of banditry, insurgency. I know all police officers around have been doing their best, they are hardworking people. All I need to do is to channel their morale and their thoughts to make everything better,” he said.
