There are strong indications that President Bola Tinubu has stepped into the escalating political crisis in Rivers State involving Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
A highly placed source close to the Presidency informed that Tinubu has summoned Wike for a meeting concerning the situation. According to the source, the meeting is scheduled to take place outside Nigeria.
In a related development, Governor Fubara reportedly departed the country on a private jet on Thursday, with plans to also meet President Tinubu in France.
This diplomatic intervention comes against the backdrop of renewed impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, initiated by the Rivers State House of Assembly, which is largely seen as loyal to Wike. During Thursday’s plenary presided over by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, Majority Leader Major Jack read out a formal notice of allegations and gross misconduct against Fubara.
