President Bola Tinubu has urged the newly appointed Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, to make transparency, credibility, and non-violence the guiding principles of Nigeria’s electoral process as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections.

The President gave the charge on Thursday at the State House in Abuja shortly after administering the oath of office to Amupitan, whose appointment was confirmed by the Senate last week.

Tinubu described the appointment as a reflection of confidence in Amupitan’s integrity and competence by both the executive and legislative arms of government. He emphasised that credible elections are the bedrock of public trust and democratic stability.

“I, therefore, urge you, Professor Amupitan, as you take on this assignment, to protect the integrity of our elections, the electoral process, and the institutional capacity of INEC,” Tinubu said. “I wish you success on your first assignment in November 2025, which is the governorship election in Anambra State.”

The President further reminded the new INEC boss of the critical role the commission plays in safeguarding democracy, urging him to carry out his duties with integrity, professionalism, and fairness.

“As the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, your nomination and confirmation are a testament to your capacity and the confidence reposed in you,” Tinubu said. “This marks the beginning of a challenging yet rewarding journey, and I trust that you will approach your responsibilities with the highest level of dedication and patriotism.”

Professor Amupitan is expected to oversee his first major electoral test with the Anambra State governorship election scheduled for November 2025, ahead of the broader preparations for the 2027 general elections.
