A high-level US military delegation has arrived in Ukraine for discussions aimed at ending the ongoing war with Russia, the US Army confirmed on Thursday.
The team is led by US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll, who is expected to meet President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv upon his return from Turkey. The visit comes amid unverified reports suggesting that Washington and Moscow have drafted a new peace proposal that includes significant concessions from Ukraine, claims neither side has formally acknowledged.
“Secretary Driscoll and team arrived this morning in Kyiv on behalf of the administration on a fact-finding mission to meet Ukrainian officials and discuss efforts to end the war,” US Army spokesperson Col. David Butler said.
Driscoll is accompanied by Gen. Randy George, US Army Chief of Staff; Gen. Chris Donahue, the top US Army commander in Europe; and Sgt. Maj. of the Army Michael Weimer. Their presence marks the most senior US military visit to Ukraine since President Donald Trump assumed office in January.
Images released Wednesday showed Driscoll meeting Ukrainian Defence Minister Denys Shmyhal, signalling the start of what officials describe as a crucial round of consultations.
The visit comes on a deadly day for Ukraine. Earlier on Wednesday, at least 26 people were killed in a Russian missile and drone strike on the western city of Ternopil, Ukrainian authorities reported. Russia’s full-scale invasion, launched in February 2022, continues to inflict severe civilian casualties across the country.
Further details of the US delegation’s discussions are expected following Zelensky’s return to Kyiv.
