United States President Donald Trump has defended his decision to share a controversial video on his official Truth Social account that portrayed former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama as apes, insisting he did nothing wrong and has no reason to apologise.
Trump made the remarks late Friday while speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, following backlash over the brief appearance of the video on his social media platform.
Responding to questions about the post, Trump maintained that sharing the clip was not a mistake, even as criticism mounted over its racist imagery.
“I didn’t make a mistake,” he said. “I don’t need to apologise.”
The president claimed he was unaware of the offensive content, explaining that he did not watch the video in full before it was shared. According to him, the portion he viewed focused on allegations of voter fraud involving election machines.
“I didn’t see the whole thing. I looked at the first part, and it was really about voter fraud in the machines — how crooked it is, how disgusting it is,” Trump said.
He added that the clip was handed over to aides for posting, suggesting a breakdown in internal review.
“Then I gave it to the people. Generally, they look at the whole thing. But I guess somebody didn’t,” he stated.
When pressed on whether he condemned the offensive portrayal of the Obamas, Trump responded affirmatively, saying, “Of course I do,” without offering further clarification or indicating whether any action would be taken regarding those responsible for sharing the clip.
