U.S. President Donald Trump has filed a lawsuit seeking at least $10 billion from the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), alleging a documentary improperly edited his speech preceding the January 6th Capitol riot.
The lawsuit, filed Monday in a federal court in Miami, accuses the broadcaster of defamation and violating Florida’s Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act. It demands damages “not less than $5,000,000,000” for each of the two counts.
Trump, 79, announced the legal action earlier in the day, claiming the BBC had “put words in my mouth” in its flagship “Panorama” documentary, which aired before the 2024 election. He suggested the edit may have been artificially created, stating, “they used AI or something.”
The program in question featured footage from Trump’s 2021 address to supporters, which he contends was manipulated to misrepresent his statements ahead of the storming of the U.S. Capitol.
