US President Donald Trump has announced the immediate suspension of all trade negotiations with Canada, accusing the country of “egregious behavior” after it aired a video advertisement featuring former US President Ronald Reagan speaking against tariffs.
In a post on his Truth Social platform late Thursday, Trump said, “Based on their egregious behavior, ALL TRADE NEGOTIATIONS WITH CANADA ARE HEREBY TERMINATED.”
The decision marks a sharp escalation in tensions between Washington and Ottawa, coming just weeks before the US Supreme Court is set to rule on the legality of Trump’s sweeping global tariffs — one of the defining pillars of his economic policy.
Trump claimed the video, sponsored by the Ontario government, was a deliberate attempt to “interfere with” the pending Supreme Court decision, which could determine whether the United States must refund billions of dollars collected through tariffs on imported goods.
The president has already imposed a 35 percent levy on Canadian imports, though certain products covered under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) remain exempt.
The minute-long advert that sparked Trump’s fury was released last week and features Reagan’s voice narrating over scenes of the New York Stock Exchange, construction cranes, and both US and Canadian flags. In it, Reagan’s remarks highlight the dangers of trade restrictions and economic nationalism — sentiments that directly challenge Trump’s protectionist stance.
