US President Donald Trump has suggested that Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer could deploy the military to tackle illegal migration, drawing parallels between border security in the United States and the UK.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday to mark the end of his second state visit to Britain, Trump said he had discussed migration issues with the prime minister during talks at Chequers.
“You have people coming in and I told the prime minister I would stop it, and it doesn’t matter if you call out the military, it doesn’t matter what means you use,” Trump told reporters.
He argued that the UK faces the same challenge as the US with migrants crossing in large numbers, citing small boat arrivals across the English Channel.
