Medical personnel at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, have sounded the alarm over persistent shortages of electricity and water, warning that the situation poses a serious threat to patient care and the hospital’s overall operations.
Sources within the hospital, who spoke anonymously, said recurring power outages have disrupted medical procedures, interfered with life-support systems and placed additional strain on doctors, nurses and other health workers. They noted that unreliable electricity in a tertiary health facility of UCH’s stature undermines its capacity to respond effectively to emergencies.
The water crisis, they added, has further compounded the problem, compromising sanitation and hygiene standards across wards and clinical units. According to the sources, the water supply point of entry from Dandaru has reportedly been damaged and requires urgent repairs to restore steady flow to the hospital.
Health workers have therefore called on the Federal Government and relevant authorities to intervene without delay, stressing that uninterrupted access to electricity and clean water is fundamental to saving lives and maintaining safe hospital operations.
Meanwhile, the hospital management is said to have repeatedly appealed for increased support to tackle the lingering infrastructural challenges, which have persisted for months despite assurances from authorities.
