The Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities and Allied Institutions (NASU) has extended its strike ultimatum to the Federal Government by another two weeks.
The unions, which had earlier threatened a nationwide shutdown over unresolved welfare issues, said the extension was granted to give the government more time to address their grievances.
In a joint letter signed by SSANU President, Muhammed Ibrahim, the unions accused the government of “unjust disbursement of earned allowances to university staff, non-payment of outstanding allowances, and other lingering welfare matters.”
Ibrahim recalled that the unions had written to the government on June 18, 2025, drawing attention to the unresolved labour issues. The letter, he noted, prompted a meeting with the Minister of Education on July 4, 2025.
Despite that engagement, the unions said no tangible progress had been made, adding that their patience was running out.
The two-week extension, they stressed, should not be mistaken for weakness but seen as a demonstration of commitment to dialogue before considering an indefinite strike.
