The United States Embassy in Abuja has issued a security alert to American citizens ahead of a planned protest slated for Monday in Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
According to the embassy, the protest — organised under the hashtag #FreeNnamdiKanuNow — is expected to attract large crowds at strategic locations, including Eagle Square and the Central Business District.
The planned demonstration was announced by activist and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, who disclosed on his X (formerly Twitter) account on October 9 that the rally would take place on October 20.
Sowore described the protest as a “historic and peaceful” march aimed at demanding the immediate release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who has been in government custody since 2021.
In its alert, the US Embassy advised its citizens to avoid large gatherings and areas around the proposed protest routes, citing the potential for traffic disruptions and possible confrontation with security forces.
The embassy also urged Americans to monitor local media reports, stay vigilant, and maintain a low profile during the demonstration.
Authorities are yet to issue an official response, but there are indications that security operatives may be deployed to strategic points in Abuja to prevent breakdown of law and order.
The planned protest comes amid renewed calls for Kanu’s release, with supporters insisting that his continued detention violates court orders.
Meanwhile, Sowore reiterated that the rally will remain peaceful, urging participants to conduct themselves responsibly as they press for justice.
