Vice President Kashim Shettima arrived in Kwara State on Saturday to visit Woro village in Kaiama Local Government Area, the site of a brutal attack that killed at least 75 residents earlier in the week.
The visit was carried out on the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, according to a statement from the Vice President’s media aide, Stany Nkwocha. “The President has directed that the vice president assess the situation firsthand and convey federal condolences to the grieving families,” Nkwocha said.
Shettima was received upon arrival by Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq and other top state officials. The governor had earlier described the victims as local Muslims who were “massacred for refusing to submit to extremists preaching a strange doctrine,” while initial unconfirmed reports had estimated the death toll to be over 100.
The attack, which occurred on Tuesday night, is reported to have followed a failed attempt by militants linked to the Islamic State Sahel Province to forcibly indoctrinate members of the community.
The visit underscores the federal government’s response to the escalating security crisis and its efforts to demonstrate solidarity with the affected region.
