The Federal Workers Forum has strongly condemned the remand of its National Coordinator, Comrade Andrew Emelieze, at the Agodi Correctional Centre, describing the action as unjust and politically motivated.
In a statement issued by its General Secretary, Comrade Ogundele Ayodele, the group alleged that Emelieze’s detention reflects a broader attempt to silence dissent and suppress voices advocating for workers’ rights.
The Forum argued that Emelieze was not imprisoned for any criminal offence but for his consistent advocacy for fair wages, improved working conditions, and social justice. It also criticised what it described as stringent and unattainable bail conditions, alleging compromise within the judicial process.
According to the statement, the development is part of a wider pattern aimed at intimidating activists and discouraging opposition to policies perceived as unfavourable to workers.
“This is not just about one individual. It is a calculated attempt to weaken resistance and silence those who speak against economic injustice,” the statement read.
Despite the situation, the Forum maintained that Emelieze remains resolute, insisting that his detention would not deter the movement but rather galvanise broader support among workers facing economic hardship.
The group called on trade unions, student organisations, civil society groups, and other stakeholders to mobilise in solidarity, urging collective action against what it termed the criminalisation of activism.
It further demanded the immediate and unconditional release of Emelieze, while reiterating its commitment to continue advocating for workers’ rights and social justice across the country.
