The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has warned politicians and their supporters against vote buying, violence and other acts capable of undermining the credibility of the 2027 general elections.
Disu issued the warning at a Strategic Security Conference and Retreat for Senior Police Officers in Owerri, where he urged political actors to compete through ideas and policies rather than resort to violence or the use of thugs.
The IGP warned politicians and their supporters against moving arms, threatening voters or electoral officers, and engaging in other activities that could disrupt the electoral process.
He said the Nigeria Police Force would take action against anyone found involved in electoral offences, irrespective of their political status or position.
Disu also disclosed that the Police would collaborate with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to investigate cases of vote buying and electoral inducement.
According to him, individuals arrested for such offences would be prosecuted, stressing that impunity remains a major factor encouraging electoral crimes.
The IGP urged Nigerians to participate peacefully in the elections and report suspected violations to the appropriate authorities.
He also assured Nigerians that the Police would not reduce their operations against kidnapping, terrorism, banditry and communal violence because of the approaching elections.
Disu said the Force would continue to confront existing security threats while simultaneously preparing to provide security throughout the electoral process.
He emphasised that police responsibility extends across the entire electoral cycle, rather than being limited to Election Day.
