UNICEF has appointed Zephia Ovia-Ikem as a NextGen Champion, joining a global community of investors, philanthropists, and private sector leaders dedicated to advancing children’s rights and improving opportunities for young people in Nigeria.
The UNICEF Representative in Nigeria, Wafaa Saeed, announced the appointment, describing it as a step toward strengthening collaboration with the private sector to drive progress in education, innovation, and youth development.
Ovia-Ikem, a tech and social entrepreneur known for her advocacy for youth empowerment, has been an active supporter of UNICEF’s Generation Unlimited Nigeria (GenU 9JA) initiative since its launch. In her new role, she will engage business leaders to prioritise the rights and wellbeing of children and young people, using her influence and network to raise awareness and mobilise resources for UNICEF’s programmes nationwide.
“Children and youths in Nigeria represent our greatest asset and brightest future,” Ovia-Ikem said. “I am passionate about working with UNICEF to mobilise the resources, networks, and commitment needed to ensure that every child and youth in Nigeria can thrive and access sustainable pathways to better economic opportunities.”
According to UNICEF, Ovia-Ikem’s appointment aligns with the agency’s mission to promote children’s rights and create inclusive opportunities for every child, particularly the most vulnerable.
UNICEF’s NextGen initiative brings together emerging leaders from around the world who contribute their resources, skills, and influence to create lasting change for children. Through the programme, members have supported emergency responses, invested in long-term educational and health projects, and amplified young voices on global platforms.
UNICEF continues to work in over 190 countries and territories, focusing on ensuring that every child, regardless of circumstance, has the opportunity to reach their full potential.
