Police in Tanzania’s main city of dar es salaam fired gunshots and teargas today to disperse protesters, after a general election marred by violent demonstrations.
The police had ordered an overnight curfew in Dar es Salaam, a city of more than seven million people, and internet access remained disrupted across the country.
However, dozens of protesters returned to the streets this morning, infuriated by the exclusion of the two biggest challengers from the presidential race, as well as what they say is increasing repression of government critics.
reacting to the development in Tanzania, Kenya’s deputy president Kithure called for calm, saying he was praying for peace and the well-being of the Tanzanian people.
