The lawmaker representing Osun East Senatorial District, Senator Francis Fadahunsi, has urged the National Assembly to consider enacting a law that would permit “responsible Nigerians” to bear arms amid rising security challenges across the country.
A short video of the senator’s remarks during plenary was obtained by newsmen in Osogbo on Thursday. In the clip, Fadahunsi, who is a member of the All Progressives Congress, argued that allowing qualified citizens to possess firearms could help address Nigeria’s worsening insecurity.
While contributing to a security-related debate, the senator claimed that about 120 countries around the world had legalised civilian gun ownership under regulated frameworks. He insisted that Nigeria’s situation had deteriorated to a point where such measures should be considered.
“We are almost at military rule, and we are at war,” he said. “He (Tinubu) is the Commander-in-Chief because they listen to him and he is spending on them. That is what can solve the problem.”
Fadahunsi’s call comes at a time when several regions have been battling escalating attacks, including kidnappings, banditry, communal clashes and targeted killings issues that have intensified public pressure on the government to find more effective solutions.
