Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to steer clear of the internal affairs of political parties and focus strictly on its constitutional mandate of conducting elections.
Speaking at the National Executive Council meeting of the Tanimu Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Makinde criticized the electoral body for what he described as an overreach of its powers.
He argued that INEC has begun to assume the role of the judiciary by determining who qualifies as a legitimate member of a political party.
Makinde, now the only sitting governor within the faction, maintained that the Peoples Democratic Party under the leadership of Kabiru Tanimu Turaki remains strong and resilient, despite ongoing internal challenges and external political pressures.
At the meeting, the party’s Board of Trustees, led by Senator Adolphus Wabara, announced the appointment of a 13-member Interim National Working Committee to address what it described as a leadership vacuum.
Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, continues as Chairman of the committee, with Arapaja Taofeek Gbola-Oladejo serving as Secretary. Other members include Theophilus Dakas Shan, Ini Ememobong, Aribisala Adewale Idowu, among others.
