Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned from office with immediate effect, citing ill health.
A letter of resignation dated 1 December was sent to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The Presidency confirmed the move in a statement by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, and thanked Badaru for his service.
Badaru, 63, had served as governor of Jigawa State between 2015 and 2023, before his appointment as Defence Minister in August 2023.
His resignation comes at a sensitive time, just after the government declared a national security emergency.
State House sources say President Tinubu is expected to notify the Senate later in the week of a nominee to succeed him.
Observers note that former Chief of Defence Staff, Christopher Musa, who reportedly met the president earlier on Monday may be under consideration.
