The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has warned that it will impose heavy sanctions on motorists, including security and government vehicles caught driving against traffic on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, as repair works continue on the Kara Bridge section of the road.
The Lagos Sector Commander of the FRSC, Kehinde Hamzat, issued the warning on Tuesday while assessing a traffic gridlock along the corridor. He expressed concern over the growing disregard for traffic rules, particularly by security and government vehicles driving one-way despite existing restrictions.
Hamzat explained that the damaged sections of the road had been responsible for several crashes, adding that repair work is currently ongoing on two expansion joints simultaneously.
The FRSC also identified overloading as a major factor contributing to road damage on the expressway. According to Hamzat, the Corps plans to deploy weighbridges along the route to curb the practice.
His comments come amid severe traffic congestion caused by the ongoing repairs on the Kara Bridge. Last week, the FRSC announced that rehabilitation works on the route would last at least two months, urging motorists to exercise patience and obey traffic regulations.
