President Bola Tinubu has stressed the importance of Nigeria’s partnership with the United Kingdom in tackling insecurity, ahead of a high-level meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
The President made the remarks on Wednesday night during a state banquet hosted by King Charles III at Windsor Castle, marking a historic moment as the first Nigerian leader to address a gathering at the royal residence.
The dinner, which began at 9:00pm local time, formed part of activities lined up for Tinubu’s ongoing state visit to the UK.
Speaking at the event, Tinubu highlighted the growing security challenges facing West Africa, particularly terrorism linked to instability in the Sahel region.
“Our West African region faces complex terrorism challenges with roots in the Sahel. Nigeria carries an enormous responsibility to help safeguard regional stability,” he said.
The President noted that strengthening collaboration with the UK remains vital in addressing these threats, adding that discussions with Starmer would focus on Nigeria’s counter-terrorism strategies and broader regional security concerns.
“In confronting these threats, partnership with the United Kingdom remains essential, and I look forward to my meeting with Prime Minister Keir Starmer,” he added.
Tinubu also reflected on his personal history with the UK, recalling that the country provided him refuge during the military regime of former Head of State, Sani Abacha.
The visit is expected to deepen diplomatic ties between both nations, with security cooperation, economic engagement and regional stability topping the agenda.
