The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has reiterated that it is illegal for unauthorized vehicles to use Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lanes across Lagos, warning that violators will face strict enforcement measures.
In a statement issued by its Head of Corporate Communication, Kolawole Ojelabi, the agency stressed that only designated BRT buses and vehicles operating under LAMATA-regulated franchises are permitted to ply the lanes.
It noted that the only exceptions are emergency response vehicles such as ambulances and fire trucks, and only when attending to emergencies.
LAMATA expressed concern over what it described as a growing and blatant abuse of the BRT corridors by unauthorized users, including some military and paramilitary personnel, local government and Local Council Development Area (LCDA) buses, as well as private motorists.
According to the agency, the trend undermines the efficiency, safety, and purpose of the BRT system, which was designed to provide fast, reliable, and secure mass transit for commuters in Lagos.
The authority maintained that all regulations guiding the use of BRT lanes remain in full force and will be strictly enforced. It warned that offenders, regardless of status or affiliation, will be apprehended and prosecuted in line with existing traffic laws.
Penalties for violations may include fines, vehicle impoundment, and other legal sanctions.
LAMATA also called on all road users, including security agencies and government institutions, to respect the integrity of the BRT system and comply with established rules, noting that cooperation is essential to sustaining an efficient and world-class transport network.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining order, safety, and efficiency across Lagos’ transport system, adding that it will not hesitate to take decisive action against violators.
