The Nigeria Labour Congress has directed workers in states that have not fully implemented the 2024 National Minimum Wage Act to mark May Day 2026 with street protests, suspending all indoor or official celebrations.
In a statement issued on Friday, the union’s General Secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja, criticised several state governments for failing to comply with key provisions of the law.
The NLC said the violations include the non-implementation of consequential salary adjustments for senior workers, irregular payment of the new wage, and the exclusion of key groups such as local government employees, primary school teachers, and health workers.
Describing the situation as both unlawful and unjust, the union said the failures amount to “an assault on the dignity of Nigerian workers.”
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had signed the revised minimum wage bill into law on July 29, 2024, raising the national minimum wage from N30,000 to N70,000.
