A former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has urged members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to rally around a formidable presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking at the party’s convention in Abuja on Tuesday, Amaechi cautioned against relying on ethnic and religious sentiments in selecting a flagbearer, warning that such considerations could weaken the party’s chances at the polls.
He stressed that defeating President Bola Tinubu would require unity and a deliberate search for a candidate with broad national appeal.
“If you expect power to come easily, you are mistaken. The party must make a conscious decision and settle for a candidate that can win,” he said.
Reflecting on the political realignments that led to the rise of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2015, Amaechi noted that success came from strategic coalition-building rather than identity politics.
He also criticised the current administration, accusing it of limiting the operational space for opposition parties.
The comments followed complaints by the ADC that it was unable to secure major venues in the capital, including the Eagle Square and the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, for its convention.
