The National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, Ini Ememobong, has warned that the party could face a leadership vacuum depending on the outcome of a Supreme Court ruling.
Speaking during an interview, Ememobong said the implications of the appellate court judgment, if upheld, could leave the PDP without functional leadership structure.
He explained that if the Supreme Court affirms the Court of Appeal’s decision, it would validate the suspension of key party figures, which he said could effectively render the party unable to present candidates.
According to him, the appellate court judgment had recognised the suspension of key individuals within the party, including figures such as Samuel Anyanwu and Benedicta Ajibade, among others.
He added that there was currently no stay of execution on the suspensions, which he said further complicates the party’s internal structure.
Ememobong further noted that if the Supreme Court overturns the decision, it would restore the authority of the faction he described as the “main PDP,” which he said is aligned with Kabiru Turaki, allowing it to present candidates in future elections.
He also referenced internal divisions within the party, alleging that a faction had openly aligned itself with the incumbent administration, describing the situation as unusual in a democratic context.
The PDP spokesman further argued that political credibility and grassroots support remain critical factors in electoral success, dismissing suggestions that only financial strength determines electability.
The matter remains subject to judicial determination at the Supreme Court, with significant implications for the opposition party’s internal structure and future electoral participation.
