The Lagos State Government has handed over the Obalende Park for redevelopment as part of efforts to transform underutilised public spaces into safer and more environmentally sustainable infrastructure.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, announced that the project was handed over to MTN Nigeria under its Corporate Social Responsibility initiative.

The redevelopment is expected to convert the space into a modern facility featuring an organised motor garage, 60 public toilets, sleeping bays, electric vehicle charging points, and other amenities, with completion targeted within 21 weeks.

Wahab stated that transport workers operating in the park had been engaged and assured that they would not be displaced during or after the redevelopment.

He added that the project is aimed at improving safety, eliminating criminal hideouts, and enhancing environmental conditions in the Obalende axis.

Following the handover, the commissioner led inspections of drainage cleaning works at George Street, Elegbata, as well as ongoing channelisation of System 1 at Odo Iya Alaro.

He said the interventions are part of ongoing efforts to address flooding incidents in areas including Apongbon, Gbagada, Ogudu, Ojota, Maryland, and surrounding communities.

Wahab noted that the initiatives reflect the state government’s broader commitment to flood mitigation, environmental sustainability, and improving resilience across Lagos, adding that the drainage systems are being cleared and expanded to improve water discharge capacity.
