The Federal Government has invited the leadership of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities and Allied Institutions to a meeting scheduled for Wednesday, April 29, 2026, in a bid to forestall a looming industrial action by the university-based unions.
Sources familiar with the development confirmed that the meeting, to be held in Abuja, is part of efforts to resolve the ongoing dispute over a proposed 30 per cent salary increase for non-academic staff.
The controversy follows an announcement by the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, who communicated the pay adjustment in a letter to key regulatory bodies, including the National Universities Commission, the National Commission for Colleges of Education, and the National Board for Technical Education.
Union representatives acknowledged receipt of the government’s invitation but maintained that their ultimatum remains in place pending the outcome of the talks.
“The government has written to the leadership of the unions and invited us to a meeting on Wednesday. We will be there to hear what they have to say, but the truth is that our ultimatum still stands,” a source said.
Another official also confirmed participation in the meeting, describing it as a critical step in addressing the concerns raised by the unions.
