UK Monarch, King Charles III has called for renewed global cooperation and stronger military alliances during a historic address to the United States Congress.

Speaking at a time of deep political division in the United States, the monarch emphasised the strategic importance of NATO, warning that the alliance remains crucial to tackling threats in what he termed an “increasingly complex and contested world.”

The address formed part of a broader state visit marked by symbolism and diplomacy, including a White House banquet hosted by Donald Trump. During the visit, King Charles presented Trump with a ceremonial bell from the HMS Trump, a Royal Navy submarine that saw action in the Pacific theatre during World War II, an act widely interpreted as a tribute to longstanding military ties between both nations.

However, some political observers say the King’s speech resonated across party lines in Washington. Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, analyst Eric Ham noted that the address came at a moment when US politics appeared “adrift,” yet managed to draw rare bipartisan attention, with lawmakers from both sides listening closely.

Ham also pointed out the notably cordial relationship between Trump and the British monarch, contrasting it with the former president’s often tense dealings with other global leaders.

Royal commentator Margaret Holder described the speech as one of the defining highlights of King Charles’ reign, citing its diplomatic weight and global relevance.

At the state banquet, Trump further stirred conversation by claiming the King shared his stance on preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, a remark that prompted a response from Buckingham Palace.

Despite the serious undertones of the visit, lighter moments were not absent. The King drew laughter during the dinner when he joked about historical ties between both nations, saying: “If it wasn’t for us, you’d be speaking French.”
