A group of Christian leaders under the Ecumenical Synods of Bishops, Archbishops, Apostles and Senior Clergy has faulted recent comments by Enoch Adeboye, General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, on marriage and domestic expectations.
Adeboye, speaking during the May edition of the church’s Holy Ghost Service, had advised young men against marrying women who cannot cook, warning that focusing solely on physical beauty without considering practical attributes could lead to what he described as a “deep trap.”
The cleric urged men to prioritise spiritual discernment and domestic competence over outward appearance, cautioning against being swayed by beauty alone. Drawing from biblical references, he cited figures such as Sarah and the Shunamite woman as examples of hospitality and domestic capability.
“There are many demons that are very beautiful… If it’s beauty alone that leads you into marriage, it’s a deep trap,” Adeboye said, while emphasising that his advice was meant as guidance for making informed marital decisions.
However, reacting to the statement, the International Secretary of the bishops’ group, Osazee William, distanced the body from the position, describing it as a personal opinion rather than a doctrinal or scriptural requirement.
He argued that reducing marriage considerations to domestic skills such as cooking does not reflect the broader values of companionship, mutual respect, and shared responsibility emphasized in Christian teachings.
