Operations were disrupted at the University of Ibadan on Tuesday as members of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities (NASU) and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) locked the institution’s main gate in compliance with a nationwide strike.
The industrial action, which centres on the delayed renegotiation and implementation of the 2009 agreement with the Federal Government, left students, staff, and visitors stranded outside the campus.
Protesting workers gathered at the university entrance, expressing frustration over what they described as years of unfulfilled promises on staff welfare, salary arrears, and improved working conditions.
Chairman of NASU at the institution, Oluwafemi-Michael Ogunlade, said the strike followed prolonged delays despite multiple ultimata issued by the unions.
According to him, the failure to conclude negotiations has continued to impact staff morale and the overall efficiency of the university system.
The protest remained peaceful, but the closure of the main gate effectively halted normal academic and administrative activities within Nigeria’s premier university.
