The pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has expressed renewed concern over the growing wave of insecurity across Yorubaland and other parts of Nigeria.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi, the group warned that escalating incidents of kidnapping, killings, and terror attacks are posing serious threats to lives and communities.
Afenifere cited several recent cases, including the abduction of a trader in Ibadan, the kidnapping of two staff of the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company along the Ibadan-Ijebu-Ode Road, as well as attacks on families in Ondo State and Ekiti State.
The group also highlighted the killing of farmers in Tede and Ago-Are, alongside the reported murder of military police personnel in parts of Kwara State.
Beyond these, Afenifere lamented the abduction of members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), as well as the displacement of traditional rulers in some areas due to persistent bandit attacks.
According to the statement, communities have been sacked, while public institutions including orphanages, churches, mosques, markets, and homes have come under repeated assault.
“Before now, reports of incidents of this nature used to be from other climes. But these days, the horrendous incidents are also occurring in Yorubaland,” the group said, listing affected states such as Oyo State, Ogun State, Ekiti, Ondo, Kwara, and parts of Kogi State.
Afenifere further noted that similar patterns of violence persist in other regions, including Plateau State, Benue State, Niger State, Nasarawa State, Katsina State, Borno State, Bauchi State, Kaduna State and the Federal Capital Territory.
