Fresh political tensions emerged ahead of the 2027 general elections after a faction of the Obidient Movement announced the disbandment of the group’s existing structure and its rebranding to the “#OBEDIENT Movement.”

The group also declared the expulsion of Peter Obi, Yunusa Tanko, and other individuals linked to what it described as an unauthorised leadership structure that emerged after the 2023 general elections.

Those behind the decision accused the former leadership of using the movement for personal and political gains, alleging that the group’s founding ideals had been compromised.

At a press briefing in Abuja, the International Coordinator of the newly rebranded #OBEDIENT Movement, Dr Barry Avotu Johnson, said the organisation had not adopted any presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 election.

He also stated that the movement no longer had any affiliation with the Labour Party.

According to Johnson, the rebranding became necessary because the original vision and principles of the movement were no longer being properly represented after the 2023 elections.

Efforts to obtain reactions from Peter Obi and Yunusa Tanko were unsuccessful, as calls and messages sent to them were not answered at the time of filing the report.
