The Independent National Electoral Commission has commenced preparations for the 2027 general elections, revealing plans to deploy more than 1.4 million ad hoc personnel, most of whom are expected to be members of the National Youth Service Corps.
INEC Chairman, Joash Amupitan, disclosed this during a courtesy visit to the Director-General of the NYSC, Olakunle Nafiu, at the scheme’s headquarters in Abuja.
Amupitan described the meeting with the NYSC management team as more than a formal visit, saying it was an opportunity to express appreciation for the role corps members continue to play in Nigeria’s electoral process.
According to him, no institution has contributed more significantly to the successful conduct of elections in Nigeria than the NYSC.
“There is no institution more vital to the conduct of elections in Nigeria than the NYSC,” he said.
The INEC chairman noted that corps members have consistently participated in election duties since Nigeria’s return to democratic rule in 1999, adding that the electoral commission heavily relies on their support during nationwide polls.
He stressed that the partnership between INEC and the NYSC remains critical to the credibility and smooth conduct of elections across the country.
