The Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, Olugbemiga Abimbola, has called for stronger collaboration between the police and journalists to enhance security operations and address emerging threats across the state.
Abimbola made the appeal on Thursday while receiving executives of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Oyo State Council, during a courtesy visit to the state police command headquarters in Ibadan.
According to the police commissioner, the media remains a critical partner in promoting public safety, combating misinformation and improving public understanding of police activities.
“Partnership with journalists remains crucial to addressing emerging security threats and enhancing effective policing in the state,” he said.
Abimbola noted that the longstanding relationship between the police command and the NUJ had continued to produce positive outcomes over the years, particularly in the dissemination of credible information to the public.
He urged journalists to support the command by highlighting its achievements and helping to correct misconceptions surrounding policing and security operations.
“We need your support in projecting our achievements and correcting public misconceptions about the police,” the commissioner added.
Describing security as a collective responsibility, Abimbola stressed that law enforcement agencies depend heavily on credible and timely information from the public and the media to effectively combat crime.
The police chief also reflected on his early experiences in journalism, recalling that he once worked as a cub reporter with Radio Kwara before joining the police force.
