The Oyo State Government has flagged off the planting of one million trees across the state as part of its commitment to climate action, environmental sustainability and ecosystem restoration.

The initiative, which forms a continuation of the activities marking the 2026 World Environment Day celebration, is being implemented in collaboration with the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA).

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Hon. Ademola Aderinto, described tree planting as one of the most practical and effective strategies for combating climate change, reducing carbon emissions, preventing land degradation and improving air quality.

He noted that the initiative aligns with the vision of Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration to build a greener and more climate resilient State, adding that every tree planted today is an investment in the future of the state.

In a symbolic demonstration of the government’s commitment to environmental sustainability, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, Dr. Sunday Ojelabi, planted a tree in honour of the Commissioner, Hon. Ademola Aderinto.

While performing the exercise, Dr. Ojelabi affectionately referred to the Commissioner as “Mr. Tree,” a nickname he said reflects Hon. Aderinto’s exceptional passion and unwavering dedication to tree planting and environmental conservation across Oyo State.

Hon. Aderinto explained that the one million trees will be planted across communities, schools, government institutions, roadsides and other strategic locations throughout the state.

According to him, the programme is designed not only to increase Oyo State’s green cover but also to encourage environmental stewardship among residents, especially young people, while strengthening the state’s resilience against the effects of climate change.

The Commissioner commended NACCIMA for partnering with the state government on the ambitious project, describing the collaboration as a demonstration of the private sector’s commitment to sustainable development and climate responsibility.

He urged corporate organisations, community leaders, youth groups and civil society organisations to actively participate in planting and nurturing the trees to ensure their survival and long term environmental benefits, stressing that the one million trees campaign represents another significant milestone in Oyo State’s climate action agenda.
