Three Lagos State-owned universities may face another round of industrial action as the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Lagos Zone, has warned that the institutions could be shut down over the Lagos State Government’s failure to implement the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU Agreement.

At a press conference held on Thursday at the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), the union accused the state government of neglecting lecturers’ welfare by failing to implement the agreement six months after it was signed, despite several engagements with government officials.

The warning affects the Lagos State University (LASU), Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), and Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH).

ASUU said it is prepared to support any action taken by its branches in the three institutions to compel the state government to honour the agreement.

Speaking on behalf of the union, ASUU Lagos Zone Coordinator, Dr. Adesola Nassir, said the prolonged delay has left lecturers feeling neglected, undervalued and uncertain about the government’s commitment to their welfare.

He questioned the government’s commitment to improving higher education, asking how world-class universities could be achieved without providing world-class conditions for teaching, research and academic work.

According to the union, Lagos State, which prides itself as the “Centre of Excellence,” should not fall behind other states that have already begun implementing the 2025 agreement.

ASUU called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to intervene urgently by concluding discussions with the union’s branches in the affected institutions and ensuring the immediate implementation of the agreement.

The union warned that failure to act could trigger fresh industrial unrest across Lagos State-owned universities.
