NDLEA seizes 115,244kg illicit drugs in three months

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has seized not less than 115,244.23kg illicit drugs of illicit drugs from January to March 2024.

The NDLEA also arrested 4,329 drug traffickers, 1,356 cases were charged to court, and 1,018 convictions were secured within the period.

These figures were contained in data obtained exclusively by our correspondent from the agency.

A breakdown of the data revealed that 71,150.46kg of cannabis, 76.36kg of cocaine, 77.86kg of heroin, 12.35kg of methamphetamine, 1,833.23kg of Tramadol, 7.19kg of rohypnol, 3,461.60kg of codeine, 215.27kg of diazepam, and 3,490.51kg other illicit drugs were seized from January to March.

It also noted that 34,919.39kg of cannabis farms were destroyed within the period.

On the number of persons arrested, 1,317 (1190 males, 127 females) were arrested in January; 1,427 (1247 males, 180 females) were arrested in February; and 1,585 (1,395 males, 190 females) were arrested in March.

The agency disclosed that 364 (349 males, 15 females) cases were charged in January; 441 (416 males, 25 females) cases were charged in February; and 551 (520 males, 31 females) cases were charged to court in March.

It, however, indicated that 268 convictions (248 males, 20 females) were secured in January; 384 convictions (361 males, 23 females) were secured in February; and 366 convictions (341 males, 25 females) were secured in March.

The enforcement agency also stated that brief counselling was offered to 1,455 (1276 males, 179 females) persons, and 312 (308 males, 4 females) were rehabilitated within the period.

It added that 356,245 (184075 males, 172170 females) persons were enlightened from January to March of the year.

Recently, the Chairman of the agency, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (retd.), said with support from partners, there has been a significant milestone in the ongoing fight against the scourge of drug trafficking and abuse.
