Health experts have called on leaders in Nigeria’s health sector to intensify efforts toward building a stronger and more resilient healthcare system capable of meeting the country’s growing medical needs.

The call was made at the Scientific Conference 2026 of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Oyo State Branch, where stakeholders emphasized the need for strategic leadership, increased investment and stronger collaboration to improve healthcare delivery across the country.

Delivering the keynote address, a medical doctor at the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta, Dr. Titilayo Ibiyemi, said strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare system requires visionary leadership, sustained investment and effective collaboration among government institutions, healthcare professionals, development partners and the public.

She noted that a robust healthcare system is critical to national development and the overall well-being of citizens, urging policymakers to prioritize the upgrading of healthcare infrastructure, the provision of modern medical technologies and increased funding for health institutions.

According to Ibiyemi, sustained investment in the health sector is essential to improving access to quality healthcare services and addressing the country’s evolving health challenges.

Also speaking at the conference, the Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association, Oyo State Branch, Dr. Happy Adedapo, stressed that quality healthcare cannot be achieved without adequate investment in medical facilities, modern equipment and essential medicines.

He called on governments at all levels to commit more resources to the health sector to ensure improved service delivery and better health outcomes for Nigerians.

Earlier, the Chairman of the conference, Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry, Prof. Oye Gureje, urged leaders in the healthcare sector to embrace transformational leadership, innovation and continuous professional development as key strategies for strengthening Nigeria’s health system.

The experts agreed that sustainable reforms, effective leadership and increased funding remain critical to building a healthcare system that can adequately respond to the nation’s present and future medical needs.
